Our five-week horstory class in London flew by and we had a great time. We opened with a look at the sculpture “Physical Energy” in Kensington Park. Students did a great job of reading the triumphalist tone of this piece dating to the height of the British Empire in 1907. We continued our exploration each Mon and Wed morning, exploring equestrian monuments around Hyde Park, witnessing the changing of the horse guards, and researching artifacts, paintings, and sculpture at the British Museum, National Galley, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain, Victoria & Albert Museum–well, you get the idea. Students compiled thematic portfolios to make senses of their intense experiences. You’ll find short videos of student activities and interviews as well as comments about their favorite things in England linked from the course home page. Sound good? I hope to offer an even more engaging course summer 2014.
